David W. Miller, CPL, is the owner and managing member of Miller Land Professionals LLC, a full-service land company located in Jackson, Miss. After graduating from Mississippi State University with a degree in geology in 1975, Miller began his 42-year career as a landman working for his father. He formed Miller Land in 2003 and expanded his business to cover more than 20 states. He became a Certified Professional Landman in 1986 and a Registered Professional Geologist in 1999. A past president of the Mississippi Association of Petroleum Landmen, Miller was named its Landman of the Year in 2002. He was the AAPL director for his local association for three years.
For the past year, Miller has served as AAPL’s first vice president. In this role, he chaired the Finance Committee, the Strategic Planning Committee and the Investment Advisory Council and was a member of the Annual Meeting Committee and the NAPE Management Committee. Miller served as treasurer of AAPL for 2006-2007.Past chairman of the Awards, Certification and Education committees, he served on the Ethics, Tax Issues and Nominating committees.
Miller also assisted on several Accreditation Task Forces and as a NAPE Ambassador. He co-chaired the Educational Foundation Task Force, which was responsible for restructuring the foundation, and subsequently served as one of the directors. In 2011 he was honored with an AAPL Special Award. Maintaining membership in MAPL, Northern Appalachian Landman’s Association, Houston Association of Professional Landmen and North Houston Association of Professional Landmen, Miller also is a member of the U.S. Oil & Gas Association, Mississippi/Alabama Division, and serves on its executive committee. In addition to being a sponsor of Newspapers in Education, a cooperative effort to put newspapers in schools to encourage literacy, Miller assists Habitat for Humanity in preparing abstracts and title certificates as well as resolving title problems on properties being acquired for new home construction and on homes scheduled for improvement loans. Furthermore, he regularly prepares mineral appraisals for Medicaid patients entering extended care facilities.
An Eagle Scout, Miller served as a Cubmaster for five years and received the Award of Merit from the Andrew Jackson Council of the Boy Scouts of America.
Celebrating their 39th anniversary this year in their new home in Clear Lake Shores, Texas, he and wife Sheila have four children: John F. Miller, RPL, and Elizabeth B. Miller, both of whom work with Miller Land; Dr. Catherine M. Sanders of Seattle, a cancer researcher for Adaptive Biotechnologies; and son-in-law Blake Sanders, a Boeing design engineer. Active members of St. James Episcopal Church since 1985, the Millers plan to make St. Thomas the Apostle in Clear Lake Shores their new church home. They enjoy art, music concerts, bridge and travel.
